Why is Dream Whip Hard to Find?

Dream Whip is a baking product made with real cream. It has a more rich flavor and smoother texture than other baking products that use artificial cream. It’s also not as sweet as other store-bought creams. It’s a dessert topping mix that can be used as a topping for baked goods and fruit salads. It’s the most similar topping to real whipped cream.

Dream Whip is hard to find due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If it is available near you, it’s likely much more expensive than other similar products. Dream Whip is also for sale on Amazon but this runs the risk of not getting the real thing. Because of its unique taste and texture, it’s in high demand from bakers.

Dream Whip Alternatives

Because of its scarcity and high price, you may be searching for replacements. There’s good news and bad news. Nothing on the market quite replicates dream whip exactly, but there are a few substitutes that mimic it sufficiently.

1. Cool Whip

Cool Whip is probably the closest thing out there to Dream Whip. The only difference is that Cool Whip is pre-made and ready to be bought refrigerated. Dream Whip is a mixture to make at home, and since it’s freshly made as you’re baking, its consistency is the most ideal for a topping. They can be used interchangeably, Cool Whip is just pre-whipped synthetic.

2. Whipped Cream

Whipped cream is another synthetic, pre-whipped cream, but it works as well as Dream Whip in terms of consistency. Its taste is slightly more sugary, but on an already sugary snack, it’s hardly noticeable. Its fat content is much higher, though.

It is created from heavy whipping cream, and whipped until peaks are formed. Manufacturers often add extra sugar and butter.

3. Greek Yogurt

For a healthier dessert topping, Greek yogurt can make for a nice replacement. It tastes much different than Cool Whip or plain whipped cream, but maybe you’re looking for something different. As a sweet cream, mix one cup of Greek yogurt and one tbsp water.

4. Making Your Own Dream Whip

For dedicated bakers, this might be the best choice. You’re willing to put in the extra work for the type of Dream Whip that other bakers fawn over. The recipe is fairly simple:

Ingredients

  • One cup cold milk
  • One envelope of Knox Gelatine
  • One teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • ½ cup sugar

Method

  1. Get a medium-sized saucepan and fill it halfway with milk. Sprinkle the gelatine on top and give it a minute to sit as it softens.
  2. Heat on medium heat, while stirring constantly. Once it comes to a boil, remove the pan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and sugar until it dissolves.
  3. Pour the whole mixture into a blender and blend at a high speed. Once smooth, pour into a bowl or other serving dish. Refrigerate for at least two hours.

Final Thoughts

Dream Whip is a special type of dessert topping that has become a sort of rarity since the COVID-19 pandemic began. There are comparable replacements like Cool Whip or whipped cream, but nothing is quite the same. Luckily, if you’re up for it, you can make your own Dream Whip at home. As inflation rises, this might become your best bet.
