You can reheat mussels in broth. Mussels reheated in the broth will probably use a stovetop. You will heat a broth on the stove and add the mussels to a broth.

  1. Add broth to a saucepan on your stove. Start the saucepan at a low level of heat.
  2. Remove your mussels from the shells. Add the deshelled mussels to the broth
  3. Cook the mussels in the broth at medium heat. You do not want to overcook mussels because they will become tough.
  4. Remove the broth and reheated mussels from the saucepan after five minutes’ elapse.

Reheat Your Mussels in the Microwave

The microwave is not the ideal method for reheating meats, but sometimes it is necessary. Many people elect to use a microwave for reheating foods out of sheer convenience. If you use your microwave, these are steps you can follow to reheat your mussels. 

  1. Take the mussels out of the shell
  2. Add the mussels to a microwave-safe dish
  3. Add a damp paper towel to the top of your microwave-safe dish. 

    *Note* This method is also common in reheating rice. If moisture is of concern, adding a damp paper towel in the microwave is a clever reheating trick!
  4. Microwave your mussels for 60 seconds. Choose to microwave in small intervals to avoid overcooking the mussels. Overheated mussels are chewy and tough.

Reheat Your Mussels in the Oven

Another option in reheating your mussels is using the oven. The oven is different from the microwave because it does not heat food from the inside out. Furthermore, you have more control when you reheat mussels in the oven than in the microwave.

To reheat your mussels in the oven:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Remove the mussels from the shell and place them on a baking pan
  3. Brush the mussels with butter. When you brush your mussels with butter, you will protect them from drying out. 
  4. Reheat your mussels for five minutes maximum

How to Reheat Frozen Mussels

You can safely thaw frozen mussels by placing them in a bowl of ice water. The mussels will sit in the bowl of ice water until the ice melts and the mussels thaw. Alternatively, you can run cool water from the faucet over the frozen mussels. The latter approach is not eco-friendly, but both methods work.

To reheat frozen mussels, you must first thaw the mussels. The mussels will become overcooked or dangerous if you do not thaw before cooking. To thaw frozen mussels, put them in a bowl filled with ice water. After you thaw the mussels, you can proceed with any of the methods above, including steaming, cooking mussels in broth or in the oven.
