How Long Does Frozen Fruit Last?

Although many people believe that frozen food is good indefinitely, this isn’t the case at all. There is no one answer for how long frozen fruit lasts because you need to look at several factors. These include the best by date, how the fruit is being stored in the freezer, and how the fruit was prepared before freezing.

However, it is possible to give you a general idea of how long frozen fruit lasts as a baseline. Unopened frozen fruit will typically remain good for 8 to 10 months in the freezer. Opened frozen fruit will only be good for 6 to 8 months in the freezer.

You can extend the life of your frozen fruit by storing it correctly, but the same is also true in reverse. Frozen fruit that hasn’t been stored properly will not last as long as frozen fruit that has.

Does Frozen Fruit Go Bad in the Freezer?

If you don’t store your frozen fruit properly, then it can absolutely go bad in the freezer. Often times frozen fruit that has gone beyond the period of about 8 months isn’t necessarily unsafe to eat, but it might not be tasty.

Food that has spent too long in the freezer can develop freezer burn and take on a different taste or texture. These flavors are usually very easy to identify, and if you’ve ever eaten freezer burned food before, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Can Old Frozen Fruit Make You Sick?

Food that has spent a long time in the freezer– including frozen fruit– is probably safe to eat, it just might not taste good. This is because it is very difficult for harmful bacteria to grow on foods in freezing temperatures. These bacteria are what cause food to go bad or grow mold, so you don’t have to worry about them affecting your frozen food while it’s in the freezer.

Is It Ok to Eat Frozen Fruit with Freezer Burn?

The good news is that you can definitely still eat frozen fruit with freezer burn, but you might not enjoy it as much. Harmful bacteria has a very difficult time growing in 0 degree temperatures, so it is technically still safe to eat. That being said, the flavor that comes from being freezer burned is very distinct and noticeable. It is very hard to mask this flavor, even when you have other ingredients in a recipe.

How Long Do Frozen Peaches Last?

Frozen peaches can last from 6 to 12 months in the freezer. The length of time usually depends on how well you store them, and you can extend their shelf life by storing them properly. Unopened packages of all frozen fruits, including peaches, will last longer than opened packages will.

How Long Are Frozen Strawberries Good For?

While some frozen fruits will only last for about 8 months in the freezer, frozen strawberries can actually last for about a year in the freezer. You can help them last a lot longer if you make sure there isn’t any moisture in the bag when you put it in the freezer.

What Fruits and Veggies Should Not Be Frozen?

For many people, buying fruits and veggies at the grocery store is a very optimistic decision. They stand there among the produce and imagine how they’re going to eat healthy that week and it’s going to be great. When it comes down to it, however, life gets in the way and the bag of spinach and that carton of blueberries is still sitting in the fridge, untouched.

Luckily, there are tons of fruits and veggies that you can freeze to use when you’re ready. Instead of tossing out food you didn’t get around to eating, try throwing it in the freezer before it goes bad. That way, you have it on hand for smoothies or anything else you might use it for when the need arises.

Not all fruits and veggies can be frozen, however. Here is a list of the fruits and veggies that you should never freeze.

  • Cucumbers – sadly when you freeze cucumbers they lose all of their crispness. They also develop a strange color and odor, as well as a slightly off taste. To preserve your cucumbers before they go bad, you can try making pickles or relish with them.
  • Watermelon – Watermelon does not do well in the freezer. Frozen watermelon becomes mushy and weird when you freeze and thaw it, and it also takes on a very unappealing texture. In order to save watermelon you don’t intend to eat right away, you can try making homemade fruit leather, pickling it, or even making watermelon jelly!
  • Lettuce – Delicate greens like lettuce and spinach can become a mushy, pulpy mess when you freeze them.
  • Green Peppers – Green peppers are another veggie that get mushy and off-flavored in the freezer. If you need to use your green peppers before they go bad, try making a homemade salsa or hot sauce.
  • Celery – Like many of the items on this list, celery has such a high water content that it doesn’t do well in the freezer. Celery is another veggie that can be pickled, believe it or not. So don’t toss it out before you give that a try!
  • Citrus Fruits – Citrus fruits take on a strange, mushy texture after you freeze them.

How to Tell If Frozen Fruit Is Bad, Rotten, or Spoiled

One of the best ways to tell if your fruit has spent too long in the freezer is simply by looking at it. After a while, frozen fruit will accumulate a lot of ice on the exterior of the fruit, and this is usually a sign that its flavor has been affected.

It is totally possible for you to salvage the fruit to an extent at this point, but you should be aware that it might taste worse than you expected. Food that has spent too long in the freezer usually doesn’t taste as good as it once did. In order to salvage ice-covered fruit, we suggest running it under some warm water to melt the ice.

How to Thaw Frozen Fruit

There are a few great ways you can thaw frozen fruit. Different type of fruit do better when thawed in a certain way, but there are typically three main ways you can approach fruit thawing.

For apples, pears, melons, some tropical fruit, and berries:

  • Thaw in the fridge – transfer the ideal amount of your frozen fruit to a bowl or a tupperware container. If you decide to use a bowl, cover the top with saran wrap. Place the container with your fruit into the fridge and close the door. After about 5 hours you can check to see how the fruit is coming along. Some fruit may take longer than others.

There are alternative ways that you can thaw frozen fruits too, including the following:

  • Use cold water – place a baggie of the fruit you want to thaw into a bowl and then fill it with cold water so it covers the fruit. Wait several minutes and then check to see if the fruit is thawed.
  • Thaw in the microwave – you can use a microwave to defrost your frozen fruit as well. To do this, place your fruit onto a paper towel lined plate. Then place the plate into the microwave and heat it in thirty second increments, checking after each.
