Can You Microwave Uncrustables?

Smucker’s Uncrustables are store-bought versions of the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Often, they are sold in bulk packaging and frozen, which means plenty of them will be put in the freezer for a while.

These sandwiches were first created in 1995, with the intention of selling them to schools. Many of us did eat them in school and remember them that way, but plenty of people also buy them for their own personal use.

Can You Microwave an Uncrustable?

The Uncrustables brand does not recommend that you microwave Uncrustables. According to them, it can pose a safety hazard when the fillings get too hot and seep through the sandwich. So, although the official statement is not to, you still can microwave Uncrustables. As the brand says, though, you just want to make sure they don’t get too hot.

How to Thaw Uncrustables

Uncrustables, as a company, recommends that you leave your sandwich at room temperature for thirty to sixty minutes to let it thaw. If you want to speed up this thawing process, you have a few options

One method of thawing Uncrustables is using your own body heat. You could set it between your hands and press softly. Putting on mittens or gloves would speed this up even more. Another way you could thaw Uncrustables faster is putting them in a warmer setting.

This could mean putting your wrapped sandwich over the dryer as it’s turned on, between heavier clothes on shelves, or next to the heater. The best way to thaw Uncrustables would be on top of your car dashboard, but this only really works if it is hot outside.

Another method of thawing Uncrustables sandwiches is using warm water. Dunk the wrapped sandwich into a bowl full of warm water and let it sit, flipping it over periodically.

How to Defrost Uncrustables

Defrosting Uncrustables can be done using any of the methods that you would use to thaw them. These are all effective ways to speed up the thawing and defrosting process of frozen Uncrustables sandwiches.

For the water method, if it makes you feel more comfortable, try putting the wrapped sandwich in a ziploc bag. Since it’s already wrapped, no water should get in, but another layer of protection can give you some peace of mind. If you choose to put it in a baggie first, just make sure that all air is pressed out of the ziploc bag.

How Long to Thaw Uncrustables in the Microwave?

As mentioned, it is important not to let Uncrustables heat in the microwave for too long. The best way to thaw Uncrustables in the microwave is to heat for fifteen seconds, flip the sandwich, and repeat. Then let it sit out for another thirty seconds before consuming.

If your Uncrustable is still not thawed out or heated enough, continue heating in the microwave in very small intervals if you like. But the recommended method by the brand themselves is still to let it sit at room temperature for a while.
